You are welcome and safe here

Hello Bobcats,

Ohio University is committed to a welcoming and safe campus environment that supports the diverse community of Bobcats we call family.

On the average college campus in the United States, 50% of campus sexual assaults happen during the period of time between student arrival on campus in August and Thanksgiving break. This time is often referred to as the “red zone.” While sexual violence can impact everyone, we know that some marginalized populations are disproportionately impacted.

At this time, we want to remind you that preventing interpersonal violence (sexual assault, harassment, stalking) necessitates that we also take a stand against racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and ableism. Resources for survivors can be found at ohio.edu/pacsm. To report bias-related incidents, visit ohio.edu/equity-civil-rights.

First-year students at Bobcat Student Orientation this summer heard this message many times: hate does not belong here. We are proud of the numerous students, faculty, and staff who have amplified this message and who have stepped forward to pledge support of survivors and against hate. Whether by spoken word, on social media, through the use of house banners, or other forms of self-expression, your messages have visibility beyond your own circles of influence.

Hate and allyship both share one thing: they can extend beyond words into action. The red zone is a critical time for our community to align with allyship, in words and action, towards those faced with hate and to stand up against hate of every kind.

As members of the OHIO family, we call on all Bobcats to continue to work together to foster an environment where we all look out for one another, and where safety is felt by every person who walks these bricks, regardless of their individual identity.

With hope,
